The
amphiteatre of Verona is
one
of the most beautiful and well-preserved of all ancient
Roman amphithetres. The internal dimensions of this elliptical
stucture measure 44,5 x 73,58 m. The original Roman tiers
were in part destroyed during the Middle Age and subsequentely
restored in the 16th century. Today, the amphitheatre of
Verona plays host to the city's famous annual opera season:
it can accomodate 22.000 spectators, who, given its unique
acoustical properties, are able to follow the performance
from even the most distant parts of the auditorium without
the use of microphones. The amphitheatre of Verona is, in
fact, the largest open-air theatre in the world.
